4.2 24-8409:01 A.M. - a) Consideration of an Advisory Election to Ascertain Voter Opinion of the Proposed Name Change from Town of Kelseyville to Konocti, and b) Consider Two Proposed Resolutions and Provide Direction to Staff
My recommendation is to retain the Kelseyville name. Changing the town name will not benefit anyone. Rather it will harm the town’s character and strain public and private budgets.
The Board of Supervisors should not recommend approval of the proposal to change the name of Kelseyville.
I believe an advisory vote of registered voters in the Kelseyville Unified School District boundary will assist the Board of Supervisors in understanding the Kelseyville residents’ positions on saving the Kelseyville name or changing the name to Konocti as proposed by Lorna Sue Sides. My recommendation is not to have the ballot for all of Lake County as only Kelseyville is affected by this proposal.
Having input on the ballot verbiage is crucial. Who will have final approval of the ballot verbiage and what is the deadline?
What does this item b mean? “b) Consider Two Proposed Resolutions and Provide Direction to Staff”
I am vehemently against the proposed name change of Kelseyville. Exactly how is a name change going to be healing for the indigenous people when their storytelling will continue to tell the stories of the past well into the future. History cannot be changed. Kelseyville, the name, will remain in so many aspects of the community for generations to come. There is no law that would require a business with the name Kelseyville in its business name to change. Kelseyville Lumber can forever retain their name. Any business could actually ADD the name Kelseyville to their current business name. We all are aware of the claims that a name change would be healing for indigenous people, but I fail to see how. The name will remain in any number of places, written and spoken. There will always be something that they, the indigenous people, will want to change and claim it must be done because they need to heal for the past atrocities against their people many, many generations ago. No to the name change!!
No to the name change. I grew up in Kelseyville. Graduated from Kelseyville High in 1986 as an Indian. Proud to be a Kelseyville Indian Alumni. History is just that history. Has nothing to do with the here and now. LEAVE KELSEYVILLE NAME ALONE!!!!!
I support the advisory vote, I also support the vote to be held within the boundaries of the Kelseyville Unified School District. I request that all interested groups have input on the verbiage of the ballot measure to ensure transparency.
I support an advisory ballot regarding the Kelseyville name change issue. The ballot initiative should be for Kelseyville residents only. Therefore, I strongly urge you to have the item on a ballot within only the Kelseyville Unified School District voting area. This would give you the insight needed to properly send your recommendation to the BGN based on the results. Thank you for your consideration.
I support an advisory ballot by the people of Kelseyville, determined by the KVUSD boundary. The people who live in Kelseyville will be more likely to accept the decision of the BGN if they know the decision they make regarding changing or not changing the town's name coincides with the opinion of the majority of Kelseyville's residents. The people who will be impacted by this decision in a material way should be the one's who make this decision.
I support an advisory ballot regarding the Kelseyville name change issue. The ballot initiative should be for Kelseyville residents since they are the ones being effected. We are the stakeholders. Therefore, I strongly urge you to have theis item on a ballot within the Kelseyville Unified School District voting area. This will be a good way to gage the community sentiment and will allow you to base your recommendation to the BGN on the results. Thank you for your consideration.
Page 13 of the U.S. Board on Geographical Names Principles, Policies, and Procedures states that “the underlying principle of the BGN for establishing official geographic names and their applications is recognition of present-day local usage or preferences. ... Existing published names, names in legal documents, and names with historical significance are given strong consideration in cases where proposed names differ from current official names.”
a) I support the inclusion of an advisory election to ascertain voter opinion of the proposed name change.
b) I recommend the voting area be designated as Kelseyville only as defined by the KVUSD boundary.
Questions:
1. Will we have input on the phrasing of the proposed Ballot Measure?
2. What is the deadline for submission of information to be included in a sample ballot?
