I’m opposed to raising the cannabis tax in Lake county
Last time this was discussed
There were according staff a 80% non renewal of existing licenses
That fact was why the board at that time put a temporary halt on the tax
Now some are saying that the county needs to get more tax money out of the cannabis operators
If we increase the tax , we will not get more revenue, from cannabis farms , but we will effectively drive the last of the compliant operators out of business ,
Pease keep in mind. If you achieve that goal , all that will happen is you will displace the regulated operators with the black market growers of cannabis
This is the lesson of prohibition , people will get their pleasure , one way or another
People are looking at cannabis as the golden goose, for generating tax money, so were we the legal growers
But Hemp came in and undercut that market, we are now waiting on Capitol Hill to close that loophole , right now Hemp is cheap , can be ordered by anyone of any age , on line
We will know more by the end of 2025 , as congress and the senate work to clarify, regulating or outlawing hemp
Once that is done we will have a much better idea if our business are viable and can or can not pay additional taxes
I also listened this morning to the homeless issue , the hungry issue and the sex trafficking tragedy
We as Lake county need to be generating jobs and money to pay for these worthy needs
Killing our business is not going to help that
We already have enough business struggling now
We need the BOS support to get through these tough times,
Grapes , walnuts , pears , tourism all hurting
