As we welcome Black History Month and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we recognize how important it is for our community to uphold the values of equity and justice. Lake County’s Proclamation acknowledges the role the NAACP plays in championing the rights of marginalized communities—particularly those who have experienced historical trauma. Considering the BOS cannot do it, let us be hopeful that the NAACP can when it comes to the Kelseyville name change.

The Lake County NAACP, led by our very own Rick Mayo, indicates that the NAACP is potentially willing to stand up against racism and hate in all its forms. Given the deep significance of this month’s celebration, we encourage everyone who cares about addressing lingering issues of inequality and injustice—such as any racially charged debates in our county—to connect with the NAACP for support, guidance, and solidarity. Whether you stand behind changing local names (like Kelseyville) that carry a painful legacy for our Native community, who were here long before any of us, or you simply want to do your part in building a more just future for our neighbors, now is the time to make your voice heard.

The NAACP’s mission includes advocating for individuals whose concerns are often overlooked. Acknowledging Historical Trauma Healing, which requires respect for all people, and our local NAACP leaders can help guide us toward deeper understanding and reconciliation because it's clear our leaders cannot. Also, Community Engagement! Collective action strengthens our shared goals, ensuring that every resident has a seat at the table.

If you’d like to learn more, share your support, and/or help shape policy in ways that align with the NAACP’s commitment to equality, please get in touch with our local branch. I will for sure be seeking support from the NAACP for advocacy and community change.

Now is the perfect moment—during Black History Month and in the spirit of Dr. King’s vision—for all of us to step forward. By contacting the NAACP, we can collaborate in meaningful discussions and advocate for proposals that affirm our community’s dedication to inclusion. Your voice matters. Let’s come together to uphold justice, embrace change, and ensure our shared future reflects the very best of Lake County’s values.
